The statue was erected in 1913 by a local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The money for the statue was raised by the group to commemorate Confederate soldiers from the area who were killed in the Civil War. 

Some news articles/ live coverage reporters say that the statue will be removed to an undisclosed location, while others say the statue will be moved to storage and eventually to a nearby cemetery alongside other Confederate memorials.
