In June of 2015, an unknown protestor placed a hand-painted Native head on the statue - an ode to Jackson’s signing of the 1830 Indian Removal Act and subsequent Trail of Tears. Only a few days later, on the 4th of July, the statue was defaced with two tags for racial justice recalling the police killing of D’Angello Stallworth in May 2015. Activists in Jacksonville have performed several more acts of defacement since including those in the summer of 2020 as shown in the photo.
